When legends link up, magic happens, and that's precisely what you'll get with the new Barbie and Sir John collaboration. The celebrity—err, icon—makeup artist (we are talking Beyoncé, Chrissy Teigen, and
Karlie Kloss!) has partnered with Barbie on a beauty editorial that is now live at @BarbieStyle.
"Barbie's an icon," explains SJ. "She's known around the world. She's a very strong woman and has always represented strength and independence with her over 200 careers."
SJ wanted Barbie to have looks that were part of his archives. His signature "natural skin and an editorial quality to the eyes and lips" can be seen in each doll's glam, and references include his work with Beyoncé at Coachella and his collaboration with Disney's The Lion King last year.
For SJ, the collaboration was a no-brainer. " I mean, Barbara has always been on a mission to remind kids they can be anything: independent, confident, and always breaking boundaries for the next generation," he explains. "I hoped to inspire beauty trends through the lens of Barbie. She's a vehicle synonymous with creativity and imagination."
The project is also personal for the celebrity makeup artist. "Growing up, my cousins who were girls had Barbies, so we used to play town hall and get them all ready," he remembers. "The reason I'm sitting in front of you or you know who I am is that my mom allowed my imagination to go wherever it needed to go, and she cultivated that. My childhood self is freaking out because Barbie is one of my clients now."
