It’s important to layer your skin care products in the correct order; otherwise your skin can’t make the most of every product’s benefits. The rule is to apply your products according to their consistency, from the thinnest to the thickest texture.
Your morning routine should consist of gentle products that nourish and keep your skin hydrated. And of course, you should protect it from UV rays so sunscreen is always a must. Ahead is a complete guide to layering your skin care products correctly in the mornings:
Step 1: Cleanse
Start your morning routine with a cleanser to wash away impurities that have built up overnight. A gentle cleanser like Dear, Klairs’s Gentle Black Facial Cleanser is a great addition to your morning routine. Its vegan formula includes extracts from black bean, blackberry, black truffle and black cumin that work together to gently cleanse skin. The cleanser also refreshes your skin, making it the perfect morning pick-me-up.
Step 2: Toner
After cleansing, it’s important to use a toner that balances your skin’s pH level. If you have dry or dehydrated skin, go for a hydrating and soothing toner such as the Heartleaf 77% Soothing Toner from Anua. The formula gives skin a boost of moisture and keeps it balanced.
Isntree’s Clear Skin BHA Toner works best for those with oily or acne-prone skin. Formulated with BHA along with willow bark extract and seaweed extract complex, the toner controls excess sebum, clears out pores and reduces inflammation.
Step 3: Essence
An essence may not be an essential item for everyone, but if you prefer an extra layer of hydration, then feel free to add it to your morning routine. Essences typically have a thick gel-like texture whereas toners have a watery consistency, so make sure to apply your essence after your toner.
Try SKINFOOD’s Royal Honey Propolis Enrich Essence, which nourishes skin with a combination of propolis extract, royal jelly and honey. Essences like this not only hydrate skin but shield it from environmental stressors and deliver a healthy, dewy glow.
Step 4: Serum or Ampoule
If you’re going to add a serum to your morning routine, go for a Vitamin C serum. Rich in antioxidants, a Vitamin C serum provides your skin with extra protection against free radical damage. SOME BY MI’s Galactomyces Pure Vitamin C Glow Serum brightens skin, improves the appearance of dark spots, and enhances skin’s firmness. If your complexion looks dull or lackluster, count on this serum to add luminosity to your skin.
Step 5: Moisturizer
Allow your serum to fully absorb (at least 30 seconds), and then apply a moisturizer to seal everything in. Go for a moisturizer with a gel consistency for the summer months, and a richer moisturizer during the winter. These moisturizers from SIORIS, I’m from, AXIS -Y and E NATURE are great daytime moisturizers for all skin types, including sensitive skin.
Step 6: Sunscreen
The final product you should apply is sunscreen. If you want to layer anything on top of sunscreen, it should only be your makeup.
Use a sunscreen like NEOGEN’s Dermalogy Day-Light Protection Airy Sunscreen to protect your skin from UV rays. In addition to sun protection, the sunscreen also evens out your skin tone. It features a gel texture that feels lightweight on skin and it doesn’t leave a white cast or a greasy after-feel.
