Fashion Menu: 4 Ways to Style Sweater Vests
Estimated Reading Time: 2 minutes
I talked about oversized blazers, a major menswear-inspired trend, in my previous article. This time, I’d like to bring out another – sweater vests!
Like many other ongoing trends such as baggy jeans, tennis skirts and camisoles, the sweater vest trend is attributed to nostalgia for the 90s and early 2000s. Instead of being plain, the latest sweater vests often have a modern twist, be it a cropped fit, a turtle neckline, cable-knit construction, patterns or color trims. There’s really no end to the colors, fits and styles you can choose from.
Sweater vests require more effort in styling than other fashion staples because they’re typically layered with other pieces. When styled correctly, they can elevate your existing wardrobe basics to a whole new level.

Breakfast Set
A sleeveless argyle sweater vest is the perfect piece to steal from dad.
If you’re a fan of 80s fashion, the classic argyle sweater vest is the way to go! Showcase your outfit-coordination expertise by teaming it with washed baggy jeans and a faux leather shoulder bag. Depending on the weather, you can wear it as a standalone piece or layer with a cropped white teeunderneath. For extra style points, complete your look with lace-up platform boots.
Lunch Set
Take a breakfrom basic tops and go for a cropped sweater vest.
The preppy 90s Hamptons style is all the rage this season! This combo of a cropped sweatervest and a flattering pleated tennis mini skirt is simple but not boring. Pick bright colors such as green and yellow for the vest to introduce some liveliness to your casual rotation. Wear a white polo tee underneath if the arm holes are big. Amp up the athletic vibes by rocking white lace-up sneakers and plain ankle socks. For accessories, consider a gold-tone chain necklace.
Tea Set
Integrate an oversized houndstooth sweater vest into a minimalist outfit.
This is a perfect outfit for high tea with friends. An oversized houndstooth sweater vest with an equally oversized collared shirt underneath is a match made in heaven for a minimalist, modern look. Get a tweed handbagand rectangular sunnies to add structure to the outfit. If you want to break out of the mold a little, throw a pair of square-toe cowboy boots into the equation.
Dinner Set
Pair a brightly colored turtleneck sweater vest with neutral tones for a look that’s fun and classy.
Add a pop of color to your outfit with this orangeturtleneck cable-knit sweater vest! Pair it with earth-toned pants, like these beige corduroy wide-leg pants. A faux leather crossbody bag and heeled sandals will inject a touch of sophistication. Complete the outfit with a woolen beret as it looks chic with turtlenecks.
