One of our fat fashion favorites, Brianna McDonnell, also known as @_The_B_Word_ on Instagram, recently released a gorgeous, artistic fashion film filled with gorgeous 1970’s inspired esthetics and swimwear looks.
We can’t get enough of this short film, showcasing 2021’s plus size Boho swim trends, so we *HAD* to hit her up to chat a little more about her project!
We chat with Brianna McDonnell about her latest ‘Fat Girl Fashion Film’
Mayra Mejia: What was your fashion inspiration for this project?
Brianna McDonnell: “With every project, it typically starts with what did I need to see growing up. What piece of fat positive media would have rocked my little chubby girl world. I’m really creating from there. For this, I’ve always loved the music of the 1970s, Carole King, Janis Joplin, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, and Cass Elliot. A lot of music from that time came from Laurel Canyon, and I live right off of Laurel Canyon. Mama Cass was the queen of Laurel Canyon and was a visibly plus celebrity, something I always want to celebrate. I wanted to play a character I wanted to be + see while paying tribute to my city’s history.”
Mayra Mejia: What message do you want anyone who watches this to walk away with?
Brianna McDonnell: “It was very important to me to showcase my body in a very vulnerable and authentic way. The internet has so many filters + photoshopped images, and I wanted to celebrate my post-Covid body, which I’m still getting used to, in a way that was really honest. I wanted people to feel empowered by that.”
Mayra Mejia: What do you want to see in the future, in terms of fat positive media?
Brianna McDonnell: “I truly believe seeing fat people on screen in roles + storylines not related to weight loss, humanizes us. People need to see fat folks in all kinds of roles because we exist, not in spite of our bodies, everywhere. I’m on a mission to create fat positive film, television, and digital media. I hope to see studios and production companies funding more marginalized creatives to tell their own stories. We need to not only be on screen more, but we also need to be behind the camera.”
