Prabal Gurung, the New York-based Nepalese designer famous for his bold red carpet looks, has expanded
into bridal with the launch of a 12-piece collection focused on sustainability and versatility.
Entitled “A Love Letter,” the collection features a range of white gowns, dresses and separates channelling signature Prabal Gurung silhouettes and emphasizing adaptability. Highlights include a boned, floor-length dress with detachable puff sleeves, a tiered gown that can transition into a minidress, a strapless ballgown with a detachable beaded top, and a suit with bell bottoms.
Pieces will be offered in sizes 0 to 14, with larger sizes available on request. Prices range from $2,895 to $10,000.
Speaking about the collection’s focus on versatility to Fashionista, Gurung explained, “we think about this often on the design floor with our ready-to-wear collections but even more so for bridal, as each individual is looking for something special that is specific to their personal needs.”
Aside from adding a personalized edge to the designer’s first official bridal offering, this adaptability is also meant to reflect his label’s wider dedication to sustainability by increasing the longevity of the pieces, which can be handed on and worn in different ways.
Gurung, who has previously designed bridalwear for private clients, has been receiving enquiries about producing a dedicated bridal collection for a long time.
Ultimately, he decided to take a plunge into the category for 2022 in order to celebrate the “courage and optimism” of being in love, especially in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. He also felt that, having designed for a number of high-profile events, he is now prepared to produce a truly special bridal offering.
“I've always believed that in order for me to do something really well, I needed to spend time learning how to do it right. My experiences with the Met Gala and other opportunities — be it the red carpet for award seasons or working with our private clients through our Atelier Prabal Gurung collection — really taught me about what individuals want and how they want to feel on the most special occasions of their lives,” the designer told Fashionista.
“I needed to get to know the psyche of what someone goes though when the spotlight is on them, hence I felt ready and prepared to launch a bridal collection now,” he added.
The debut Prabal Gurung bridal collection will be available online and in stores from October 2021.
