Biography:
Uldus Bakhtiozina (1986, Saint-Petersburg, Russia)
Leningrad born artist and film director Uldus Bakhtiozina coming from the family with mixed religions and nationalities, expressing her family background through her artistic works.
Uldus has two degrees: one in politics, the other in graphic design. She studied at West-North Academy of Public administration in Saint-Petersburg (2003-2007) and at University of Arts, London (2007-2009), there she also took a course in street fashion photography at Saint Martins (2008), which introduced her to the world of photography.
In October 2014, Uldus was named one of the 100 women changing the world for the better by the BBC.
In 2014 Uldus became first Russian speaker in a history of TED conference, gave a talk in March 2014, Vancouver, Canada about her photo project Desperate Romantics. Since the beginning of 2016 Uldus has become Senior TED fellow. In April 2017 Uldus gave her second Ted Talk about her project Conjured Life. Both talks are available at TED.com. They have been viewed over two million times. Uldus also spoke at Conference CDI conference in Mexico, as a finalist of Gifted Citizen Prize.
In June 2016 Vogue Italy named Bakhtiozina the Best Young Fashion Photographer at PhotoVogue.
In March 2017 Uldus was a finalist in the Laguna Art Prize.
Uldus has had work exhibited in Russia, England, Germany, Canada, Hong Kong, Belgium, Italy and the United States.
Uldus’s works are included in permanent collections at the Ruya Foundation of Contemporary Art in Iraq; Faberge Museum in St Petersburg; Tretyakovskaya Gallery in Moscow.
She is a member of the Royal Society of Arts, London.
In the 2019/20 Season Uldus made her debut at Royal Opera House as costume and make-up designer and style supervisor for Aisha and Abhaya, a co-production between The Royal Ballet and Rambert.
In 2020 she has completed her work as a film director, script writer, costume designer and producer for her feature film debut Tzarevna Scaling (Дочь Рыбака). This film was selected for Berlinale 2021.
Uldus works with big institutions like Royal Opera House and Rambert; museums like Faberge Museum and Tretyakovskaya Gallery, bringing her unique style and love to Russian culture with the fresh breath of contemporary, in the form of a beauty, but with deep research to ethnocentric mythologemes influence into modern collective consiousness.
Uldus names her style as Tatar Baroque.
