The GQ Return-to-Style Survey
JP: I buzzed my head for the first time in my life because it felt ridiculous to be doing my hair every day for Zoom calls. I never wash my hair
anymore, just condition it.
Gabe Conte, web producer: I grew out my hair and beard and got jacked as shit.
AW: Between buzzing it all off and bleaching it platinum blonde, my hair choices mirrored the chaos of 2020.
NJ: Nothing radical. My hair grew and grew and grew. I had the low bun situation, like Brad Pitt at the Oscars. That was a big moment for me personally, tbh. I recently cut a few inches off, so now it's more like smoking a cigarette in a flannel shirt (remember that?).
Here's the Right Way to Grow Your Hair Out
By Adam Hurly
CW: The closest thing: I got an ear piercing several months before the pandemic and have significantly upped my earring rotation over the course of the pandemic. I'm excited to show that off now.
YG: My hair has gone from Jordan Catalano in the My So-Called Life pilot to Jordan Catalano in the My So-Called Life finale.
CG: I started working out every morning, five to six days a week, because there was nothing better to do. I don't necessarily look all that different but I feel a lot better.
What will you never wear again?
WB: Fast fashion.
JP: Tight pants
AW: Tight pants.
GP: Anything that I bought specifically to wear “in a professional setting” when I was in my 20s.
GC: Crocs are OVER.
HG: Skinny jeans! And you shouldn't either.
The Prince of Skinny Jeans Says Goodbye To All That
KN: A tie (I will wear my Purple Label bowtie on occasion, though). Short socks. Stupid shoes that kids wait in line for. Cheap pants.
TT: Slim suits. It’s all about big, expressive pants and shit now. I don’t wanna look like a Jared Kushner type who watches Dr. Umar videos on Youtube. I recently got this soft, stretchy, old school Italian suit from Bonobos which’ll, wishfully, make me channel James Baldwin, but will likely have me exuding late aughts Kanye West
RT: If anything, I am open to MORE possibilities!
Clay S.: A three-piece suit. (Though, to be honest, I never wore one before.)
What's the one thing you've had tucked away that you can't wait to show off to your buds/work friends/yoga classmates?
SH: A pair of Our Legacy leather pants.
GO: Our Legacy Camion mules. They're on the way to my house as I type this.
SA: I've been amassing ties, mostly from second hand shops, as I hope to have excuses to look nice in 2021.
WB: I've been collecting vintage ties throughout the pandemic, mostly from unexpected crevices of the internet. I have a few I'm really excited to finally debut.
CW: A pair of the beloved JW Anderson chain slides.
CC: I just got a pair of white Stan Ray painter pants. The fit is very mid-century: stovepipe legs, belt almost at the ribcage. They're not so noticeable unless you also spend a ton of time thinking about pants—but it draws the people that do want to talk about clothes from a mile away. And that's what I've missed: hanging out and talking about pants!
YG: I impulse bought a pair of faux snakeskin Needles track pants a few months back, and I'm psyched to step out in 'em in a big way all summer.
RT: I'm never wearing something normal to dinner ever again. I'm so excited to wear, like, a backless Saint Laurent cocktail dress I have from Hedi's second season.
Clay S.: Tiger print John Elliot basketball shorts that I bought impulsively right at the beginning of the pandemic, when, thanks to stay-at-home orders and Tiger King, both comfortable clothes and big cats were trending. With each passing day, those shorts are becoming more and more of a (hopefully still cool) relic of a time gone by.
