To paraphrase Martha Stewart, you never know who you’ll bump into at Nobu Malibu. In Stewart’s case on Monday evening, that chance encounter included one Pete “Cute

guy with painted fingernails” Davidson, who happened to be wearing a massive pair of whiskered, baggy jeans.

These days, there’s always something new going on with Pete Davidson, and with denim. The idea of an “in” silhouette for jeans is more fluid than ever, and yet—when’s the last time you saw a celeb out in the wild in some real circa-2003 slouchy jeans? It kind of takes your breath away, right? There’s something about the sight of Davidson departing the most conspicuous place to wear an outfit in Los Angeles in some sneaker-enveloping denim (which he paired with doubled-up merch from the L.A. deli Uncle Paulie’s) that evokes a younger Pete, perhaps stepping out from the sliding doors of the Staten Island Mall, say, 15 or 20 years ago. The same kind of jeans you may have been wearing 15, 20 years ago.

Thom Browne aside, Pete’s always had a soft spot for regressive dressing. He loves plastic beaded jewelry and the kind of eyesore streetwear that would make a 14-year-old say “Sick!” But fashion’s ever-steady nostalgia pendulum keeps swinging, and maybe it is about time for drop-crotch, wide-legged, streetwear-meets-skater jeans you might spot in a 2003 Neptunes video to come back into play. (All threats regarding low-rise denim’s resurrection must have a counterpart, no?) Let the back pockets hit the floor.
