Ketanji Brown Jackson has officially become the first Black woman to sit on the U.S. Supreme Court and the third African American to take a position as an associate justice there. Nominated by President Joe Biden from a shortlist of highly qualified candidates, Jackson now rises from her role as a federal appeals judge to a place on the bench replacing her mentor, Justice Stephen Breyer. Senators confirmed her on Thursday, April 7 with a vote of 53-47.

Earlier this year, Breyer announced he would be retiring from the court when its summer recess begins, likely in late June or early July. The 83-year left an opening for Biden’s first Supreme Court nomination. It was quickly pointed out that during his 2020 presidential campaign, Biden promised that his first nomination to the court would be a Black woman. Jackson underwent a controversial Senate hearing process in which she was repeatedly grilled by Republican lawmakers on the Judiciary Committee including Texas Sen. Ted Cruz (a one-time Harvard Law classmate) and Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley.

2. Netflix debuts trailer for first Nigerian original series ‘Blood Sisters’

Netflix has confirmed the release date for its latest EbonyLife Studios collaboration “Blood Sisters.” The script to screen four-part original series directed by Biyi Bandele (Half of A Yellow Sun) and Kenneth Gyang (Oloture) will launch globally on May 5, 2022. StarringIni Dima-Okojie and Nancy Isime as its leading ladies, the Temidayo Makanjuola-created series follow two friends Sarah (Dima-Okojie) and Kemi (Isime).

Written by Craig Freimond and Zelipa Zulu, the anticipated series was shot in Lagos in September 2021 and is the latest collaboration to roll out.

3. American man of Nigerian descent stabbed to death after a domestic incident with model girlfriend

A 27-year-old man living in Miami has allegedly been stabbed to death by his girlfriend after a domestic dispute on Sunday, April 3. According to reports, the Miami Police Department claims that the man was stabbed inside One Paraiso in the city’s Edgewater neighborhood. While authorities did not release the man or woman’s name involved in the alleged tragic incident, he has been identified as Christian Toby Obumseli, who is Black. His girlfriend, according to reports, is a white model and influencer, Courtney Taylor Clenney. Obumseli was reportedly transported by Miami Fire Rescue to JMH’s Ryder Trauma Center where he died.

After allegedly killing her boyfriend, Courtney Tailor was detained by the police and threatened to kill herself at the station. The Baker Act was then carried out against her. The Florida Baker Act law allows mental health professionals, judges, and law enforcement to commit a person to a mental health treatment center for 72 hours. This takes place if the person shows signs of suicidal tendencies or violent behavior.

Hypocrisy is “one of three systems that rules the world,” President Paul Kagame said while condemning powerful countries for their reaction to the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. Kagame said that powerful countries idly watched the genocide happen, and so “have no lessons to teach anyone” and accused them of “covering up their responsibility” by talking about justice and democracy.

“There are three systems that govern the world, one is called democracy, the other is called autocracy, the third in between – most powerful, very silent, effective – and that is hypocrisy,” Kagame said. The UN has dedicated April 7 as an international day to reflect on the genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda.

5. Arsenal reveal Thomas Partey injury details as midfielder suffers muscle damage

Arsenal has revealed that Thomas Partey suffered damage to a muscle in his right thigh during their Premier League clash against Crystal Palace on Monday. The Gunners suffered a 3-0 loss at Selhurst Park and the midfielder had to be taken off in the second half because of the injury. Mikel Arteta admitted after the match that the midfielder’s condition was a “big concern” after he signaled that he needed to come off.

The club has since revealed that he faces at least weeks out of action and will be sent to see a specialist about the issue. “Thomas has since received further assessments, and a subsequent scan has shown muscle damage to his right thigh,” an update from the club read. “We will continue to assess Thomas in the coming weeks, during which time he will also receive further specialist consultations.”
