Lizzo Looked Like Renaissance Royalty at the 2022 Met Gala
Lizzo stepped out looking like a Renaissance painting on the steps of tonight's Met Gala, her first time attending the Costume Institute event since 2019. For an evening of Gilded Glamour,
the “About Damn Time” singer looked fabulous with a trailing gold-embroidered coat, curve-hugging gown, stacked gold choker, and her signature razor-sharp nails in black. It was also inarguably one of the most on-theme looks of the night.
Along with the baroque, hand-embroidered look by Thom Browne, Lizzo also brought a special accessory to the red carpet: her flute. On Vogue's live stream of all the stars' arrivals, Lizzo said “It took 22 thousand hours to make this coat,” adding, via People, “I'm just so happy to be in it, I feel like a piece of art.”
Lizzo's appearance comes after launching her “no shame” shapewear collection, Yitty, in late March. (The line is named for her childhood nickname.)
“Instead of thinking about size in this linear way, we're thinking about it on a spectrum where everyone is included,” she said in a statement for the launch. “Everyone's size is just their size. It's not high, it's not low. It's not big, it's not small. It's just your size.”
The star of Amazon's “Watch Out for the Big Grrrls” also had a huge at Coachella last month, joining headliner Harry Styles on stage for Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” and One Direction's “What Makes You Beautiful.”
In a podcast interview, Lizzo reflected on how “genuinely surprised” she was that Styles asked her to perform with him.
“The crazy thing is, it really was genuinely a surprise for me too because I think I found out Wednesday night, and then I was rehearsing. ‘Cause I was genuinely going to Coachella to see Harry,” she said. “And then Wednesday night, it was like, ‘Do you want to come and rehearse and do ‘I Will Survive?” And I’m like, ‘Fuck, yeah!’ So I pulled up a day early, we ran it three times in his trailer, and then we just did it.”
