Sustainable Fashion: Ssōne for Vogue Talents February 2021
Sustainable fashion: this is the main theme of Vogue Talents February issue.
The British brand Ssōne is one of the brands selected for the Vogue TalentsFebruary 2021 Issue. The designer Caroline
Smithson has told us about her work and her sustainable approach to fashion.
“We’re interested in all areas of sustainability. As a small company we can be very grassroots in everything we do – from reducing single-use plastics to chemical management in dye processes, making sure our factory partners are meeting minimum wage requirements, or using certified textiles, biodegradable packaging and carbon-neutral delivery. Each of our garments states the country where it was sewn, and also where the fabrics were woven, often the mill it came from and any certification that comes with it. We even specify how the manufacturing has benefitted its local community. Internally, we strive to give our staff a mentally healthy working environment. To educate and connect with the people, we also offer community workshops on mending clothes, embroidery and recycling materials.”
“Re-SsOne is an initiative that’s helping us work towards our goal of zero waste. We keep every scrap of fabric from our sampling and production process, and then use these off-cuts to create new patchworks. We also retrieve unsold stock from previous seasons and rework it into the next collection to maintain the product’s value and reduce the need to keep producing more pieces that risk ending up in a landfill.”
