Whether you’re doing a 5-step or 10-step skin care routine in the evenings, it’s important to layer your products correctly. Here’s an easy rule of thumb: apply your skin care products according to their consistency, from the thinnest to the thickest texture.

What’s the right way to layer your skin care products in the evenings? Keep reading to find out.

Steps 1 and 2: Double cleanse

No matter how long your day was, don’t skip out on double cleansing. Even on makeup-free days, make sure to use a cleansing balm or cleansing oil first to get rid of dirt buildup and layers of sunscreen.

After your first cleanse, follow with a water-based facial cleanser for a more thorough cleanse. Double cleansing ensures that no traces of dirt and makeup are left behind, which allows you to continue with the rest of your evening routine with a clean canvas. It’s important to pick a cleanser according to your skin type. Head back to Chapter 39 for a guide on the right type of cleanser for each skin type.

Step 3: Toner

If you’re using an exfoliating toner at night, apply it before your hydrating toner. For those with sensitive skin, apply a hydrating toner first, followed by a chemical exfoliant to reduce chances of irritation.

PURITO’s AHA BHA Refreshing Solution is a great addition to a nighttime routine. It’s formulated with AHA to remove dead skin cells and BHA to treat congested or enlarged pores. Wait for a few minutes before applying a hydrating toner like Haruharu WONDER’s Black Rice Hyaluronic Toner to add moisture back into your skin.

Step 4: Serum

A serum has a lighter consistency than a moisturizer, so make sure you apply your serum first. Our skin repairs itself at night; to make the most out of this time, use a serum that strengthens your skin barrier and nourishes your skin at the same time.

Beauty of Joseon’s Repair Serum is formulated with ginseng root water and snail mucin to repair a damaged barrier while boosting skin elasticity. If you have oily and acne-prone skin and treating blemishes is your main skin concern, then try SOME BY MI’s Yuja Niacin 30 Days Blemish Care Serum. The serum is perfect for those with stubborn dark spots or breakouts.

Step 5: Eye cream

Once your serum is fully absorbed, gently pat an eye cream around your eye areas. Eye creams are lighter than moisturizers so avoid applying them last. Otherwise, the skin around your eyes won’t be able to reap all of its benefits.

Want to look like you got a full eight hours of beauty sleep? THANK YOU FARMER’s Miracle Age Repair Eye Cream can help you achieve that. Packed with nourishing ingredients including ceramides, shea butter and argan tree kernel oil, the eye cream softens the appearance of fine lines and nourishes the delicate eye area.

Step 6: Moisturizer

Your nighttime moisturizer is not a step ever worth skipping. After applying layers of skin care products, you need a moisturizer to seal everything in. Our skin loses water overnight, so applying your moisturizer last is key to prevent moisture loss. For deep hydration, go for COSRX’s Hyaluronic Acid Intensive Cream to help strengthen the skin’s moisture barrier and keep skin hydrated throughout the night.

Step 7: Face oil

If you have dry or dehydrated skin and need a product that provides skin with an extra layer of nourishment, then face oil is your skin’s best friend. Adding a few drops of face oil, such as AROMATICA’s Reviving Rosehip Cold Press Organic Face Oil, after your moisturizer doesn’t just help lock in moisture – it’s also the secret to glowing skin. To wake up to a glowing complexion, all you need is to add a face oil to your nighttime skin care routine.
