You may think that there’s less need to buy new clothes because of lockdowns and social distancing, but my shopping appetite hasn’t
been tamed at all. In fact, I find shopping almost therapeutic. The fashion industry has stayed active, and I just don’t want to miss out! Before beginning your transitional haul, these are the top trends you need to know about:

1. Color – Celery
Just when you thought Classic Blue would dominate the rest of the year, an unexpected guest – celery – showed up. The color is basically a toned-down version of lime green and contrasts well with brown, gray and black, which are the darker choices among this season’s most popular colors. If you think it’s too yellowish, try olive, sage or mint green.
2. Color – Tan
Oranges and browns are easy go-tos for autumn – think pumpkin, walnut, gingerbread, cinnamon and syrup. Just the thought of these is enough to make me feel warm and merry! This year, purplish and romantic chocolate-brown has been popular. Go tone-on-tone for some retro and preppy gentlewoman looks.
3. Silhouette – Balloon Sleeves
The sleeve trend is still big, and this season it’s heavily influenced by the Victorian era. Bib necklines, ruffles, bustier cuts and hip-emphasizing details complement balloon sleeves for dramatic but still figure-flattering silhouettes. As part of the sleeve trend, mutton sleeves, capes and power shoulders also have a strong presence this season.
4. Accent – Flapper Fringes
Yes, we’re talking about the slinky dresses with long, soft and glittery Gatsby fringes all over. With fewer parties, it’s perfectly fine to adapt the trend to the cozier and more practical cowgirl fringe coats and boho capes.
5. Accent – Ruches
Ruches go hand in hand with drawcords. A drawcord in the middle of a top creates ruches to accentuate the bust, while one at the side of a skirt naturally creates a scalloped hem and ruches to make hips look wider. Either way, it promotes an hourglass figure.
6. Style – Preppy
The soul of this trend is the sweater vest. Get them plain or in an argyle print, in bright or muted colors. Wear with a collared blouse, tapered pants and brogues, topped off with a blazer or trench coat for the colder months. If you want to go the extra mile, throw on a newsboy cap and leather belt.
7. Style – Equestrian
Equestrian and preppy styles share the same root, with the only difference being that the quintessence of the former is rider boots. Get them in brown or black, and match with almond skinny pants, a knit polo and a navy blazer. Alternatively, take the monochrome approach with brown plaids.
8. Item – Skirt Suit
Turn to the powerful but sexy skirt suit for serious boss girl vibes! The blazer keeps you warm and shapes a structured silhouette, while the skirt serves as a sweet substitute for pants. Look to comfortable materials like wool and tweed to make it more wearable.
9. Pattern – Mini Checks
I’m basically talking about the tattersall in equestrian outfits, but you can also opt for its sisters – the buffalo check for grunge looks, or mono-colored graph checks to keep it plain. The smaller the checks, the easier it is to style since they’ll be less likely to overwhelm. Color-wise, try yellow and brown.
10. Pairing – Dress + Pants
This trend is in line with the season’s call for bottom-heavy silhouettes while also keeping you warm and faux-pas-free. The easiest way to rock this trend is to layer skinny bottoms under a coat dress, just like how you’d wear leggings under a dress for chilly days.
