The wait is finally over, Evangelion fans, as the legendary Japanese anime comes to a close – at least for now! After several delays, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time was released in Japan on March 8, and available internationally on August 13 on Amazon Prime Video.
The anime franchise began in 1995 with the original 26-episode TV series Neon Genesis Evangelion, followed by the movies Death & Rebirth and The End of Evangelion in 1997. Launched a decade later, the Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy comprises of four movies released over 15 years: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone. (2007), 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance. (2009), 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo. (2012) and 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time (2021).
If you think an anime’s influence on fashion is only limited to cosplay, think again! In March this year, Japanese streetwear brand Undercover debuted a F/W collection of puffer jackets, longline parkas, hats and gloves inspired by the gigantic armored humanoids of Evangelion. To give all EVAs a proper farewell, it’s time to revisit their unique color palettes and designs – maybe you’ll want to dress in these iconic color schemes!

Unit-00 is a prototype and the first successfully made EVA. It first appears in episode 5 of the anime series. Unit-00’s design boasts a single lens-like optical device on the head, a blue armor, white arms and black joints. The armor was originally orange, but after sustaining severe damage during combat in episode 6, it was painted cobalt blue.

Pilot: Shinji Ikari
The TV series begins with main character Shinji being recruited to pilot Unit-01, arguably the strongest of all EVAs when it goes “berserk.” Unit-01 is characterized by a unicorn horn, asymmetric markings on the two eyes, a purple armor with neon green accents, black arms and black joints.

Pilot: Asuka Langley Soryu
Unit-02 is marked by four spider-like green eyes, a red armor, orange accents and white arms. While Unit-00 is a prototype and Unit-01 is a “test type,” Unit-02 is the first successfully built Evangelion for combat – a point pilot Asuka takes pride in.

Pilot: Toji Suzuhara / Asuka Langley Soryu
Unit-03 is in indigo and piloted by Shinji’s friend Toji in the TV series, but in the Rebuild film series, it is in black and piloted by Asuka. Despite Unit 03’s dark palette, its body resembles that of Unit-02 while its head looks like Unit-01.

Pilot: Dummy System
These bird-like automated EVAs are the major villains in The End of Evangelion, though I think they’re the coolest EVAs! The main features that set them apart are the eel-like heads with red lips, big white teeth and a thick tongue. They’re also equipped with retractable wings and a shield that can turn into a Lance of Longinus replica.

Pilot: Mari Makinami Illustrious
Unit-05 is a provisional unit stationed at the U.S./Russian NERV Bethany Base, and it’s the only EVA with four wheeled legs. Its left arm has a pincer and its right arm is a lance that can pierce through A.T. fields. Unit-05 appears in the second movie of the Rebuild series. It has an army green armor with canary yellow accents and a white helmet with visor. Its lance is in maroon.

Pilot: Kaworu Nagisa
Mark.06 appears in the first and second movies of the Rebuild series. It has a navy armor with orange accents and a glowing red visor that covers the eyes. A white halo appears above Mark.06’s head when it levitates.

Pilot: Mari Makinami Illustrious
Unit-08 first appears in the third movie of the Rebuild series and is perhaps the most girlish-looking EVA given its pink exterior and crown-like horns. Its eight peridot eyes are arranged like a necklace. This EVA usually provides assistance to Unit-02.

Looking almost the same as the original Unit-00, Mark.09 first appears in the third movie of the Rebuild series. It displays several Angel capabilities, including the ability to regenerate its head. Its white tendrils at the back can morph into a rocket booster.
