It’s easy to forget that everybody’s favorite academic over-achiever from J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series (played by Emma Watson) is first and foremost a witch. If you prefer Hermione Granger’s good girl vibes over the darker energies of fellow witch Bellatrix Lestrange, you’re probably also secretly more like Bellatrix yourself. That doesn’t mean your style leans gothic and flamboyant though, as your eclectic wardrobe reflects both your rebellious instincts and your hidden yearning for order. Melding Bellatrix-friendly touches like leather and lace with preppy staples such as sweaters and knit vests, your fashion persona is part schoolgirl heroine, part low-key goth queen and 100% tough girl. The titular character from Studio Ghibli’s enduring coming-of-age classic Kiki’s Delivery Service is a magnet for those who love witches − and film characters – who are kawaii rather than villainous. Although she’s armed with plenty of classic witch items, including a broomstick, black dress and black cat, Kiki is proof that bad witches aren’t the only ones that command the audience’s attention. If our sweet-natured heroine − in her signature costume of a floaty black dress and red bow − appeals to you, chances are you’re a dreamer with a resourceful spirit and a keen sense of aesthetics. Most likely to plan outfits days in advance and least likely to chuck away teenage tees, you merge the folkloric with the retro. You’d probably feel right at home in a frilled blouse layered underneath a beige pinafore dress, along with a slouchy cardigan, ivory beret and black buckled loafers. With your love for brightly colored accessories, you’re likely to puncture the neutral palette with a yellow crossbody bag brimming with sunny vibes.
4. Ursula – The High-Glam, High-Camp Witch
An icon amongst Disney’s female villains, Ursula, the sea witch from the classic animation The Little Mermaid, makes pure evil look like a whole lot of fun. A streetwise diva with dangerous magical powers, she’s the bold and brassy foil to the silent and demure nature of the Little Mermaid. Ursula is a million miles away from the grim-faced witch in Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. If you’re drawn to her sass and charm despite her villainous ways, your wardrobe is probably full of snazzy street-style outfits to camouflage your shy personality. Never content with playing it safe sartorially, you readily embrace quirky prints, bold colors and unconventional materials, sometimes all in the same item of clothing. Most charismatic amongst the quartet is Nancy Downs, whose grungy, 90s-inflected sensibility separates her from other teenage witches in pop culture history, such as Alyson Hannigan’s Willow Rosenberg from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Kiernan Shipka’s Sabrina Spellman from Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
Dramatic without resembling Halloween costumes, Nancy’s ensembles are a masterclass in channeling witchy energy with an alterna twist. If you’re a sucker for her pop punk looks, which include patent leather jackets casually thrown over subversive takes on a Catholic school uniform, chances are you’ve got a wild streak yourself. This casual yet sharp ensemble, which comprises of a pleather shacket, raw-edged sweater and distressed jeans, is just the ticket. Coupled with asymmetrical chain earrings and pearl-studded combat boots, the look is perfect whether you’re off to the mall or an all-night showing of Halloween movies.
