2020 has truly been BlackPink’s year: collaborating with big names like Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez and Cardi B, dropping not one but three music videos ahead of their first full album, and breaking plenty of streaming records left and right.
I’ve been admiring the group’s diverse fashion repertoire through their MV releases, from dramatic and blinged-out in How You Like That to pastel-hued sweetness in Ice Cream, and I was worried about whether the album’s main track, Lovesick Girls, would deliver – both musically and sartorially. Thankfully, my worries were for naught. Fun, edgy, wearable and highly nostalgic of the early 2000s, the girls’ punk-inspired looks actually ended up being my fave of their three concepts.
Group Outfit #1
As a fan of wearing dark colors, I found the girls’ color palette visually appealing right off the bat. Despite the muted shades, the girls keep things interesting with patterns, layering and jewelry. Several key pieces that reoccur in the music video are graphic tees, wide elastic belts, fishnet tights and knee-high boots.
Lisa
Lisa’s look is comprised of a black sleeveless turtleneck and a striped cardigan in blue, red and white, as well as a pair of denim shorts. These are all relatively simple pieces you might already have in your wardrobe! However, she ups her fashion game with a wide leather belt adorned with gemstones to cinch in her silhouette, a pearl necklace to highlight her turtleneck, and garters to elevate her shorts. A pair of berry-colored patent-leather knee-high boots adds textural juxtaposition.
Rosé
Similarly, Rosé’s outfit is also built on wardrobe staples like an oversized graphic tee, black shorts and a red plaid shirt tied around the waist. Accessories like a leather harness, fishnet tights and a silver spike-chain choker add edge to the basics. She brings in a pop of color and updates the punk uniform by layering a patterned blue cropped camisole over her graphic tee. For footwear, she sports short lace-up white boots to brighten her ‘fit.
Jisoo
Jisoo’s outfit is brighter compared to the other girls, due to her eye-catching asymmetrical sleeveless dress in a blue and white tie-dye print. Like Rosé, she dons black shorts and a tee – only hers comes with an arm cutout and safety pins for a punk reconstruction. Her lace-up knee-high black boots conform to the overall darker palette, while her accessories are kept relatively simple: silver-toned open hoop earrings and a matching chain choker.
Jennie
In keeping with Jennie’s affinity for coordinating sets, which she often rocks off-duty, she’s styled here in a matching set comprising a leopard-print cropped camisole and cardigan. Going all out with the animal print trend, she wraps a green-trimmed leopard-print scarf around her neck for Parisian chic that counteracts the print’s typically wild, free-spirited vibe. Her dainty pearl dangle earrings echo the ladylike appeal of her neck scarf, while her denim shorts, leather belt, blue tights and black cowboy boots flirt with a punk-meets-western style.
Group Outfit #2
Compared to the last set of outfits, this second one is much more colorful, featuring bright pops of red, orange, green and blue – befitting the fun the girls are having while snacking on fries, getting in food fights and firing paintballs. There’s also a preppier twist to the looks here with the presence of plaid, argyle and pinstripes, but don’t worry, they don’t stray far from their punk roots – just look at Jisoo’s necktie!
Jennie
Jennie’s get-up is grounded in the color blue, as her patterned cardigan, back-tie crop top, denim shorts and denim cutout dress all come in various shades of the hue. Her large red hair bow, which picks up on the red notes of her cardigan, is the perfect accessory to complete the girlish look. She noticeably goes free of jewelry since the outfit is loud enough as is. A pair of tall platform boots in brown, which perfectly complement the blues, tops things off.
Jisoo
Jisoo’s ensemble here is another classic punk uniform that deftly mixes masculine and feminine pieces: a long-sleeved white button-up worn off-shoulder, a pleated denim mini skirt with a tonal belt and silver chain, a cropped pinstriped vest, and a red necktie with a subtle green paisley pattern. Her pinkish-purple sheer plaid tights add subtle color, and her black platform lace-up boots are a no-brainer for stomping around in edgy flair.
Rosé
Pairing flawlessly with her cotton-candy pink hair, Rosé is clad in a coordinating plaid knit set with flashes of red, yellow and orange. Her cardi is super cropped, while her mini skirt is gathered with allover safety pins – another motif. Similar to Jennie’s red bow, Rosé’s orange bow hairclips imbue childlike charm and highlight the colors of her outfit. Meanwhile, her lock chain necklace and black lace-up shoes give off tough, industrial vibes.
Lisa
The counterpart to Jennie’s blue and Rosé’s orange, Lisa’s green outfit includes a cropped plaid blazer and embroidered camisole. This uber high-energy look also features jeans with allover rhinestones for a truly hypnotic effect, as well as a multicolored chain choker. Her buckled black belt and short lace-up white boots tie the disparate pieces together and keep the look from going OTT.
Solo Looks
In addition to group outfits, each of the members flaunts wardrobe changes for their individual shots in the MV, with certain repeating elements serving to build each member’s unique style and image.
Jisoo
The first of Jisoo’s two solo looks sees her in an off-shoulder mesh maxi dress in pale yellow while standing in a romantic field of blue flowers. The statement dress is balanced with accessories like layered necklaces consisting of a chain choker and coin pendant necklace, fishnet tights and a black corset belt to give shape to the floaty dress.
In comparison to her dreamy and elegant first look, the second harks back to the second set of group looks, with its mix of bright colors and plaid. Jisoo’s knotted hot-pink T-shirt channels shamelessly girly energy, while her gray hoodie and plaid jacket combo gives off relaxed skater boy vibes. Combining the moods of both pieces, her plaid ruffled mini skirt matches her jacket, and its splashes of pink tie in with her top. The look is complete with lace-up black boots and fishnet tights, the latter of which is present in both of Jisoo’s ‘fits.
Rosé
Rosé’s two solo looks are very similar, and positively epitomize pop-punk-princess style. Personally, I can’t look at these outfits without thinking of Avril Lavigne. In her first outfit, she rocks a dark gray graphic tee with a distressed neckline alongside a black leather jacket, black thigh-high boots and an orange tulle mini skirt – forgoing the classic pink option for a more contemporary, playful choice.
In her second look, she wears a white Elvis-Presley-print T-shirt with a cropped marled gray sweater and a tiered tulle mini skirt in a peachy yellow. For footwear, she rocks white Mary Jane platforms with uber-high, chunky heels that add toughness and maturity to the schoolgirlish style. Compared to her first look, this one is much softer, both texturally, with her knit cardi and socks, and in terms of colors – a neutral skirt rather than neon, and pristine white shoes rather than black.
Lisa
Both of Lisa’s looks come in a dark palette but with plenty of attention-grabbing bling for liveliness. The base of her first look includes an oversized distressed graphic tee and an equally oversized denim bomber jacket. A bedazzled bralette made of multicolored rhinestones is an unexpectedly extravagant pick to top off the ‘fit. On the accessories front, her leaf-shaped rhinestone earrings go hand in hand with her bralette.
Lisa’s second look also features serious glitz and glamor. The most striking is obviously her iconic leather jacket featuring allover LED lights. But her jewelry – including a zig-zag rhinestone choker, silver-toned crescent moon necklace, fingerless leather gloves adorned with rhinestones, and an ever-so-slightly terrifying spike-cluster ring – are all equally significant. Knee-high snakeskin boots splashed with pink and a patterned pink scarf that hangs from her shorts mirror the pink lights of her leather jacket. Her denim shorts and tie-dye bustier top come in dark faded shades so as to not detract from the statement pieces.
Jennie
Sprawled atop a car covered with handwritten “YOU + ME = 4EVA” markings, Jennie’s entrance is certainly show-stopping, but that, of course, is due in part to her impeccably put-together outfit. She puts a spin on the typical girl-boss outfit with a cropped blazer embellished with colorful brooches for a fresh, young take, while her cutout trousers come with faux pearl details. Cementing the idea that this is not your usual pantsuit, Jennie layers a casual, oversized lip-print graphic tee underneath, along with a sexy black leather harness corset. Black platform boots vibe effortlessly with the rest of the outfit, and her precious pearl bow hair clip adds a high-teen touch that’s true to Jennie’s signature style.
Finally, we see Jennie in what appears to be a psychiatric ward. Reclining comfortably with her stuffed toy (which definitely bears resemblance to the Mang-tae dreamcatcher doll from It’s Okay to Not Be Okay), she’s seen in a babydoll turtleneck sweater dress and a pair of slouchy thigh-high socks made of the same knit.
