When and How Often Should You Switch Up Your Skin Care?

Estimated Reading Time: 3 minutes

Who here has experienced using a skin care product that works well at first, but seems to gradually lose its effects as you go through the

third, fourth or fifth bottle? Rest assured, this is quite normal. Over time, our skin adjusts to the products we use continuously for months or years, so it no longer reaps the benefits like it used to. This presents an opportune time to revisit your vanity and see what needs swapping out.

Most people play it safe once they’ve found their holy grail in skin care. However, your skin adapts to those tried-and-tested products! It’s recommended to switch up your skin care routine every now and then. This helps you to achieve continuously glowing skin, and to know what works and what doesn’t as you try out different products. Scroll through to see when to make the switch!

When seasons change

As seasons change, skin changes too. For those who experience all four seasons of the year, a tell-tale sign to switch your skin care is when you switch your wardrobe. When you start pulling out chunky knits to stay warm, your skin also needs more moisturizing and protection from cold weather. Seasonal transition periods are when skin’s hydration needs and sun exposure change, so your skin care routine should adjust accordingly.

In cold weather, use facial oils and creams. Glycolic acid is a winter-worthy ingredient as it helps boost the production of hyaluronic acid, preventing flaky and dry skin. In warm weather, swap out your winter skin care stalwarts for gels and lightweight lotions, and replace glycolic acid with salicylic acid for mild exfoliation. Sunscreens should change at least twice a year as well, as the longer a sunscreen sits untouched, the more likely it becomes less effective in blocking out UV rays.

When you no longer get consistent results from the product

There comes a time when you crave the adventure of experiencing something new. Similarly, skin desires the new and different as its condition is always changing – that’s just the nature of things.

Typically, skin care products take around six weeks for benefits to be seen. Then over time, your skin adjusts. A tried-and-tested product may not work the same as it did before, or at all. This is the time to shake things up by trying other products! Do your research based on your skin needs. If your skin is looking lackluster, try a more potent product that will restore its glow. Brands like face republic are always coming out with new releases, one of its latest being the Blooming Forever Nourishing Serum.

If a new brand is becoming the talk of the town, take that plunge and try its products! Keep up-and-coming brands like CHASIN’ RABBITS, melixir and BADSKIN on your radar. Our skin deserves some fun, too.

When you’re experiencing negative skin changes

Our skin reacts differently to products, sometimes for the worse. When this happens, stop using the product. It’s easy to tell which item is causing an adverse skin reaction when it’s new to your routine. However, sometimes a skin care staple we’ve been using for ages may cause a negative reaction. This can be due to reasons like the formula’s ingredients oxidizing or chemically changing over time. Inflammation, redness, dryness, breakouts and excess oil production may occur as a result. Skin allergies that weren’t always there may develop over time, too.

When skin encounters a new sensitivity, go back to the basics. Appease your skin by opting for gentle and neutral formulas. Brands like iUNIK and ROVECTIN offer a range of hypoallergenic products, which may be safer options to soothe your skin during this period. You might end up being a total convert after using them!

When skin starts aging

It’s never too early to start preventing signs of aging. Don’t wait until fine lines appear on skin to take action! Take notice when wrinkles become more prominent and when your skin doesn’t bounce back the way it used to. Instead of stressing about these skin concerns, try introducing anti-aging products to your routine.

First and foremost, amp up your skin’s moisture. Dry skin makes fine lines and wrinkles more apparent; by moisturizing skin, its appearance becomes plump. Add an extra level of hydration with serums, essences and mists. Consider NEOGEN’s Dermalogy Real Ferment Micro Serum and Dermalogy Real Ferment Micro Essence, which both contain Bifida Ferment Lysate among other probiotic ingredients to soften and hydrate skin. The serum also contains collagen to tighten skin.

Swap in products that directly target aging, including those formulated with retinol.  For those with sensitive skin, turn to bakuchiol, which is found in enough project’s Moisture Cream, for example. Peptides also work wonderfully to boost skin elasticity, and Vitamin C and niacinamide help restore youthful-looking skin.
