As we’re more homebound during the pandemic, going to a spa for facial treatments isn’t always feasible. The good news is that plenty of beauty brands offer at-home LED treatments, so you can indulge in LED face masks from the comfort of your abode.
How do you use one? Keep reading to find out.
What is an LED face mask?
Light Emitting Diode (LED) face masks work by emitting various infrared light waves that penetrate the skin at different depths. The types of light therapy available vary among at-home devices, but the most common are blue, red and amber.
What can an LED face mask do for skin?
This skin care device comes in handy if you’re looking to treat acne, fine lines or wrinkles. You can target specific skin concerns depending on the color of light used.
Blue LED light is associated with antibacterial effects to purify skin, improve active acne, prevent future breakouts and regulate sebum production.
Red LED light soothes inflammation and reduces redness. It’s also perfect for mature skin or if you’re starting an anti-aging skin care routine, since red light works to stimulate collagen production and improve the skin’s elasticity.
Amber or Yellow LED light helps reduce redness. It also strengthens the skin barrier and revitalizes skin, leaving you with a more radiant complexion.
Who can use an LED face mask?
The great thing about LED light therapy is that it’s non-invasive, making it suitable for all skin types including sensitive skin.
How to incorporate an LED face mask into your skin care routine
LED face masks are easy and convenient to use. Simply set aside 20 minutes for the mask session. It’s best to use on freshly cleansed skin, so make sure to complete your double-cleansing routine beforehand.
Although the masks work best on a bare face, they can also help certain skin care products, particularly serums or ampoules, to penetrate into skin better. You can apply a lightweight serum before starting the LED face mask session, but don’t apply moisturizer until afterwards. Here’s a selection of serums to pair with LED light therapy:

When will you start seeing results?
It takes time to see the benefits of LED face masks. Don’t expect immediate results, with the exception of the instant glow you get afterwards. For more transformative effects, use the mask consistently at least three times a week. Once you do, you’ll start seeing results in around three to four weeks.
LED face masks are on the pricey side, so use it regularly to make the most out of your investment!
