Grammy-nominated boy group BTS has dominated the international music scene this year, so it’s no wonder that we’re getting a lot of requests to cover their style! The septet is known worldwide for their catchy songs, dance moves and impeccable style. Each member has a unique personal style ranging from Jungkook’s dark e-boy look to J-Hope’s vibrant street style.
Since Style Files’ first blog post in 2018, BTS’s V has been the idol most frequently requested by readers to be covered in this column. V, whose real name is Kim Tae-hyung, stands out even amongst his peers with his preppy and retro style. His eye for small unique details, bold prints and daring styles has earned him a spot on the list of most fashionable K-pop stars.
Clean and Cool
For the look’s first layer, I went for a turtleneck in V’s favorite cool gray color. The winter staple protects the singer’s vocal cords from the freezing cold. To match the gray hue, I layered on a button-up featuring a cloudy blue sky print. V is often seen wearing clean-cut shirts in winter and summer, so choosing this piece is a no-brainer. This shirt has a distinctive geometric collar that would catch the star’s punctilious eye.
On The Beige Stage
Come wintertime, V – a master in layering – is the perfect star to emulate for chilly days. The idol is often seen donning layers upon layers, resembling a cute yet chic winter bear! A common piece in his arsenal is plaid knitwear. This beige knit vest with a black and orange tattersall design contrasts the cool hues of the turtleneck and shirt. To complete the plaid look, I went for semi-matching brown baggy pants with orange accents in the tartan print.
V’s winter look isn’t complete without a large coat and scarf enveloping his silhouette – a simple yet chic combination. I opted for a crisp beige midi-length coat with oversized lapels to contrast the plaids and other details in the outfit. A simple two-toned fringed scarf drapes nicely over his coat and offers extra warmth.
City Gent Essentials
Continuing with warm hues, a brown pleather clutch and loafers give the look a dandyish twist. V’s go-to bag is a clutch and this piece boasts a unique, asymmetrical cut-out handle that he would appreciate. For footwear, the singer likes to keep it simple. He offsets his unconventional style and busy prints with clean and classic loafers.
Retro Accessories
V loves to dress daringly on and off stage. The retro, off-kilter tinge in his styling hints at his fun 3D personality. To illustrate that, I’m bringing in another color that isn’t in the outfit yet − forest green. Adding oversized square glasses in the deep jewel-toned shade gives the look a preppy and quirky touch. To cap it all off, V usually keeps his head warm with a beret. I styled the singer with a green and red plaid beret to subtly bring together the prints in his outfit.
