In Defense of Lara Jean's Combat Boots in To All the Boys I've Loved Before

Today, Netflix added the third and final movie to its buzzed-about rom-com trilogy, To All The Boys, and the much-anticipated movie isn't the totally clichéd teenage rom-com you were likely anticipating. It's a refreshing

take on the genre's most obvious tropes and an all-around feel-good flick. It's not just us who think so—the internet has collectively lost it for the sweet (and unexpected) romance between the movie's stars, too. It follows high schooler Lara Jean Covey (played by Lana Condor), an introverted girl whose world largely exists in the pages of her journal, but we need to talk about—you guessed it—her style, more specifically her combat boots.

There's a scene early on in the first movie where Lara Jean runs into her frenemy Gen, who promptly takes it upon herself to put our girl down for the black combat boots she's wearing, making a conceited reference to her military-inspired shoes. Luckily, her best friend, Chris, quickly comes to her defense, pointing out Gen's far less stylish choice in footwear. What Lara Jean's lug-sole combat boots did to deserve the comment, we're not quite sure. But it doesn't take much imagination to feel her teenage insecurity instantly sink in, and it makes me want to run to her defense.

Maybe it's because I feel for Lara Jean in this situation or maybe it's because the tougher boot style is actually trending for fall, but I'm inclined to speak up on her behalf as, ahem, an expert on the matter. Gen, little do you know that the vintage combat boots Lean Jean scored on Etsy, of all places (!) were seen on such recent runways as Proenza Schouler and Phillip Lim.
