Thewatchclock: Supreme x Seiko Marathon Clock
The single best thing about this watch: it’s not a watch at all.
The backstory: Supreme is notorious for collaborating with anyone (this season includes
a box of Supreme-branded Wheaties) and this week the brand’s slapping its logo on an obscure Seiko product. The item in question is a miniaturized version of Seiko’s Marathon Clock—an item that pretty plainly broadcasts its purpose. Seiko uses regular-sized versions of these clocks to time sporting events—like, well, marathons. This version of the clock, which typically comes in taxi-cab yellow, crunches down all the functionality of that timer into a luggage-friendly model that’s only four inches tall. The small version of the clock can do practically everything the regular-sized one can—it’s built with a countdown feature, stopwatch, alarm, snooze button, and calendar.
Some Supreme superfans have theorized that every the brand chooses accessories based on their relation to nefarious activities. A crucifix from 2011 is actually stowing a pocket knife, a New Testament doubles as a stash box, and then there are knee-busters and skull crackers like hammers, baseball hats, and crowbars. Figuring out the Marathon Clock’s devious use-cse is trickier. I guess bad guys are frequently counting down until the completion of their evil plans—maybe they could use this Supreme Marathon Clock.
This watch matters in the world of watches because: it looks like the great watch boom is no longer constrained to the wrist. One of the things watch collectors love to say is that their hobby is the most portable luxury that exists. Unlike a painting you hang in your home or the car that stays in the garage, a watch can go anywhere with you. But who needs portability when you can simply have a really cool clock? Those who follow watches closely may remember that earlier this year Hodinkee released a $5,900 Travel Clock that sold out in no time at all. Turns out that once your wrists are covered you start to look around, and wonder where else you can put an awesome time-telling device. And what better time for a clock than now, as we’re spending more time in our houses and in-home offices?
Congratulations to Drake: Remember a couple of years ago when photos of Drake’s California mansion surfaced on the internet? Seared into my brain is the image of the Supreme rug at his bedside and a Supreme x The North Face bag not far away. This alarm clock would fit in nicely at his Château de Swag.
Where and when to buy it: The Supreme x Seiko Marathon Clock will drop at Supreme’s website on Thursday, April 22nd, at 11 a.m. EST. The price for the non-Supreme Marathon Clock is $42.50—there might be a hype tax tacked onto the final price for this version.
