4. Military detain Mali’s president, prime minister, and defence minister
On Monday, military officers in Mali detained the president, prime minister and defence minister of the interim government. This move is also deepening political chaos just months after a military coup ousted the previous president. They took President Bah Ndaw, Prime Minister, Moctar Ouane and defence minister Souleymane Doucoure to a military base in Kati, outside the capital Bamako. They were taken hours after two members of the military lost their positions in a government reshuffle.
Their detention also followed the military takeover in August of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita. Besides, the development could exacerbate instability in the West African country. Violent Islamist groups linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State already control large areas of the desert north.
5. Euro 2020: Sergio Ramos left out of Spain squad
Sergio Ramos has been left out of Spain boss Luis Enrique’s Euro 2020 squad. Real Madrid center-back Ramos, 35, has struggled with injury and has only played one game since March. His absence means Enrique picks no players from Real Madrid for this summer’s delayed tournament. The tournament is taking place between June 11 and July 11.
Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte also had his switch from France to Spain approved by FIFA. Therefore, he makes the 24-man squad and is also one of 10 players from the Premier League picked by Enrique. Other players are Brighton keeper Robert Sanchez, Leeds United defender Diego Llorente, and Wolves forward Adama Traore.
