Last year might've been the year of Adele's comeback, but she's not done surprising us yet. The singer just released a new video for her song “Oh My God,” from her
latest album, 30, to start the new year off strong.
Directed by Sam Brown, who helmed Adele's “Rolling in the Deep” video in 2010, “Oh My God” is a gorgeous visual display shot in black and white. Adele is clearly the star, dressed in elegant gowns (including a custom Vivienne Westwood number) and perfectly-styled updos, but as the camera travels through a bare studio, it also spotlights an array of dancers helping to bring the upbeat song to life. (According to the
">credits, we have choreographers Megan Lawson and Taylor James to thank.)
While Adele is a master of power ballads, “Oh My God” has more of a pop energy but still remains grounded in a way that complements her repertoire. She hasn't explicitly shared what the song is about, but the lyrics tell a story of cautiously falling in love with someone new—and even surprising yourself while doing it. Adele sings in the chorus:
Oh my god I can’t believe it
Out of all the people in the world
What is the likelihood of
Jumping out of my life
And into your arms
Maybe baby I’m just losing my mind
Cause this is trouble
But it feels right teetering on the edge
Of heaven and hell
Is a battle that I cannot fight
Listeners are likely to draw parallels between the lyrics and Adele's new relationship with sports agent Rich Paul following her divorce from Simon Konecki. Speaking to Oprah Winfrey about her new romance, Adele said this is the first time she's “loved myself and been open to loving and being loved by someone else.”
Between the “Oh My God” video release and her upcoming Las Vegas residency, Adele already has a lot to celebrate this month, but there's still more to come. In an Instagram she posted at the top of the new year, she announced that “there’s so much coming, I’m excited for you all to see it.” So are we.
