Emily Cooper, the titular character from Netflix's Emily in Paris, has confused me from the start. The woman is clearly accomplished and very good at her job. Her American office sent
her to Paris to improve the French office's social media presence, and when her colleagues actually let her do her job, she kills it (though I do want to have words with the Netflix writers about some of Emily's campaign slogans).
But when it comes to her personal life, Emily reminds me a lot of who I was in college, newly 21 and studying abroad for the first time. I do hope my conversations were slightly less awkward than some of hers, though. I don't know, maybe don't say "I know that beach—Saving Private Ryan, right?" when someone says they're from Normandy.
That above reason could be why, when British Vogue asked Collins Emily's age, she guessed 22.
"I don't believe we've ever given her a specific 'number' for her age, but I believe that she's pretty fresh out of college," the 31-year-old told British Vogue. "Maybe this is her first year after graduation. I want to say she's, like, 22-ish."
But Emily constantly brings up the fact that she has a master's degree, so fans were confused that she could be 22, which is the age most people are when they graduate with a bachelor's degree. When she got this feedback, Collins pivoted.
On Friday, she posted the following on her Instagram story: "Emily looking at me when I get her age wrong. Sorry girl."
Lucas Bravo, who plays Emily's neighbor and crush, Gabriel, told E! that he had his own theory on the age issue: "I would say she's probably 24. Something happens after 26 where women start exploring...in terms of personality. I feel like she's still very strong-willed and she has certainties, but yeah I would say [that she is] around 24."
Considering that, at 24, I landed my first job with benefits but still hadn't learned the consequences of mixing alcohol, that estimate sounds about right. Hang in there, Emily.
