As the world continues to mourn the devastating loss of rapper Riky Rick, who reportedly took his own life on Wednesday, rapper AKA says it’s time to address the issue of “how damaged and broken the men in this country are.” The rapper, who lost his fiancée in an apparent suicide in April 2021, took to his Instagram to pen a heartbreaking letter in which he explained how “much suicide” he’s seen in the past year. AKA lamented that it was mostly men who were taking their lives.

“Let’s keep it 100. The last 5 people I know who took their own lives, 4 of them are men. I’ve seen so much suicide over the last year I can’t even feel anything any more,” the rapper wrote. AKA said people needed to realize that mental health was bigger than whether a person had money or not, slamming those who questioned why Riky took his life when he had just bagged a gig with African Bank.

Russia has finally launched its long-feared “full-scale invasion” of Ukraine after Vladimir Putin announced a “special military operation” in a televised address to his citizens in the early hours of Thursday morning. Explosions were reported soon afterwards on the outskirts of the cities of Kharkiv, Kramatorsk, Mariupol, as well as the capital Kiev, prompting many Ukrainians to form queues at supermarkets, ATMs, and petrol stations in preparation for weathering the siege or attempting to flee.

Ukraine’s airports have been shut down temporarily and secured against potential Russian aircraft landings while Russia has closed its own airspace around the border to civilian access for the next four months. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said the government was introducing martial law on all territories of the state and urged citizens to stay at home as much as possible.

US president Joe Biden, UK prime minister Boris Johnson, and UN secretary general Antonio Guterreshave joined other global powers in condemning Moscow’s “unprovoked and unjustified” attack and promised to hold it “accountable,” with Mr. Johnson expected to announce further “unprecedented” sanctions to Parliament on a later date.

5. Mohamed Salah: Another Premier League record for Liverpool and Egypt forward

Mohamed Salah (160) has broken Didier Drogba's record (159) of the most goal contributions by an African player in the history of the Premier League. He also now has the highest goal ratio per game than any other Liverpool player in history. pic.twitter.com/xE4ORK0ejA

Mohamed Salah is running out of records to beat at club level, as the Egyptian set another Premier League landmark in Liverpool’s hammering of Leeds United. The 29-year-old scored twice and set up another goal in Wednesday’s 6-0 victory over the Whites, taking him to 160 goal involvements in the English top flight and a new record for an African player. That figure, comprising 116 goals and 44 assists, means Salah has beaten the previous tally set by former Chelsea and Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba.

Remarkably, Salah who has been Liverpool’s top goal scorer in each of his four seasons at the club, has achieved this feat in 72 fewer games than Drogba. Salah is now 27th in the all-time Premier League goal involvement list, but almost halfway to Alan Shearer’s record of 324. The Liverpool forward leads this season’s scoring charts with 19 league goals — seven more than second-placed team-mate Diogo Jota — despite missing two games while on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations.
