Dandruff is a scalp condition that’s caused by an overgrowth of a yeastlike fungus, malassezia, which feeds on sebum and also on dead skin cells which occur naturally due to formation of
new skin. It may also come as a result of dry scalp and a skin condition called seborrheic dermatitis. No matter the cause, we have tips on how to get rid of that dandruff for good.
If left untreated, excessive dandruff is one of the most embarrassing things that could happen to anyone. Think of it: you are all dressed up for a formal dinner or interview wearing your most beautiful wig and suddenly you feel an all-consuming need to scratch a seriously itchy scalp. Not only that but also with the knowledge that a cascade of white flakes would follow.
While there are plenty of over-the-counter products designed to treat dandruff, many people have reported not being able to find an over-the-counter remedy that works for them. This is where natural remedies, which are usually just as effective, come into play. Ditch the dandruff shampoos and try these DIY homemade dandruff treatments to get rid of those pesky white flakes.
Here are 4 easy DIY ways on how to get rid of dandruff fast…
1. Baking Soda
Baking soda possesses anti-fungal properties that could be beneficial in fighting fungus responsible for dandruff. It is an exfoliant that can remove excess skin cells and oil from the scalp and is also a quick, convenient, and readily available remedy for treating dandruff. Note that baking soda has a very high pH level which can damage the scalp if a person uses it too frequently. So it is best to use it moderately. For use, take a few tablespoons full of baking soda and apply directly to the wet scalp. Leave for up to 3 minutes and wash off thoroughly.
2. Salt
The abrasiveness of table or sea salt works wonders for scrubbing out dandruff flakes before washing. To use, shake some salt onto your dry scalp then spread it through your hair giving your scalp a thorough massage. Leave for 30 minutes, then wash off with shampoo.
3. Garlic
The unpleasant smell of garlic may make it a no-no for some but the medicinal value should definitely not be overlooked. Garlic contains anti-fungal properties such as ajoene and allicin that are effective in easing the fungal infection that causes dandruff. For use, peel the garlic and chop it into pieces, pound, and then add the paste to a heated saucepan with olive oil. Heat the mixture for 3 minutes and strain. Let it cool down, then apply to your scalp. Leave for 30-45 minutes before rinsing with water.
4. Onion Juice
Research has shown that onions are rich in photo-chemical compounds that can help fight dandruff. The application of onion juice can reduce dandruff and also eradicate flaky skin. For use, blend onion to extract its juice, strain it and apply to the scalp thoroughly. Leave for an hour and wash off with warm water.
