FW 2020 2021 Trends: Big Collars are Huge this Fall

In the past, they were mostly associated with a preppy style, but today collars – and in particular oversize designs – are proving that within a

fashion world decidedly looking to the future there is still a trend that chooses to embrace old school simplicity again. The simplicity of natural materials such as cotton and linen, and of high craftsmanship and refined trimmings, evoking the crisp bed linen and handmade tablecloths of a country home. This feels like opening grandma’s trunk to discover plenty of little gems that will embellish the looks forFall Winter 2020 2021

For Gucci the inspiration comes from childrenswear, with designs that recall school smocks; oversized collars are finished with lace, rounded or in velvet and scalloped, teamed with romantic skirts or peeking out from intricate'gothic lolita' long dresses. This same retro feel was also detected at Alberta Ferretti where a double ruffle collar with a pussy bow is worn over a striped puff-sleeved shirt. At Tory Burch collars are sharply pointed and hanging to the waist. A style that goes even further back in time, in the same vein as Moschino, whose ruffled necks transport us to the 1700s and to court with Marie Antoinette. Finally, Erdem captures the collar’s more refined and luxurious side,  adorning it with embroidery and pearls or turning it into true fabric jewerly pieces, while Valentino adds a ruffled collar to supremely  sophisticated evening gowns.
