Let It Go: 5 Ultimate Signs It’s Time To Say Goodbye To That Wig

Wigs have finally made it to the mainstream after decades of struggling to be accepted. Back in the day, women weren’t bold enough to admit they had wigs on, and let’s face

it, most wigs available at the time had a way of looking grandma-ish and all too phony.

To be quite honest, I’m not really a wig person––simply because I don’t think they look good on me. But that’s a story for another day. Still, I have sisters and friends who wear wigs often so I’m no stranger to them. Through my sisters and friends, and because I have innate critical eyes for fashion and beauty, I’ve studied wigs and have made several observations about them. One of these is how attached some women are to their wigs. I feel the love they have for them and that love is even more obvious when the wig has paid its dues yet is still kept on active duty.

But let’s go back to how far wigs have come. Fast forward to our time and wigs are no longer treated like an STD. Celebrities, influencers, and the girl next door have all embraced this hair trend. I mean, who doesn’t love to go from Beyoncé to Janelle Monáe at the snap of a finger?

Wig advocates will easily tell you that they help protect your hair but we can all agree that the best part of it is that freedom you feel when you take it off as you close the door behind you. Phew, bliss personified.

Time to say goodbye….

But all these do not make them eternal or invincible, whether they are synthetic or human hair made. There comes a time when you just have to let your favorite wig go and this is something many wig lovers hate to hear because they’d rather do a ’till death do us part’ with every wig. Yes, I know you spent a fortune on it, but, your reputation is even more expensive than that.

For starters, once your darling wig no longer maintain its style even after a good shampoo wash, deep conditioning, and straightening/curling, these are signs that the end is near. Not here yet, but very near.

Here are 5 signs you shouldn’t still be wearing that wig…

#1. Irreparable fraying

The occasional fraying can be fixed with hair treatments and random trimming but when the fraying has worked its way right up to the top and is persistent, you shouldn’t still be wearing that wig.

#2. Balding closures or frontals

Although there are quite a few hacks to cover up a balding frontal/closure, they are very temporary. After a while, your hair/scalp will be bared for all to see through the very thing that was supposed to cover it, and it’s just too embarrassing. We can’t keep blaming it on a bad hair day, ladies! If your wig is starting to look like you’re parting the red sea then you shouldn’t still be wearing it.

#3. Tangling

When the wig is overtly tangled, stiff, and spongy irrespective of combing and moisturizing then it’s probably time to say adios! A spongy wig is a reputation killer and if that’s the case, you shouldn’t still be wearing that wig. Trust me, there are people out there who refer to people based on their beauty errors. Suddenly you’re being referred to as “that girl that wears spongy wig” or “the tangled weave babe.” Girl, you’ve been through too much to still get a bad rep just because of a wig issue.

#4. Split ends

Sometimes you look in the mirror and the ends of your favorite wig look so thin, you fear that strong wind could blow it off your scalp. Honestly, it’s most likely not going to fall off, maybe it’s broken fiber or the wig’s just tired but one thing is for sure, it’s time to say goodbye.

#5. An odor that won’t go away

Sometimes, a sign you shouldn’t still be wearing that wig is an unpleasant odor that lingers even after washing the hair. I can’t tell you how many of my guy friends have complained about girls with offensive smelling weaves or wigs.
