After topping last year’s Met Gala best-dressed lists with her tulle princess ball gown and Marilyn Monroe hairdo, Billie Eilish returned for an evening of Gilded Glamour with a decidedly different
approach: The “Happier Than Ever” singer opted for a pale green and cream Gucci corset gown, crystal-adorned black choker, and a messy-chic updo.
Eilish seems more amused than bothered by the unsolicited critiques her outfits tend to receive: She gave enough “of her shit” at the Oscars to get memed for her oversized ruffled gown, and though her Grammys trench coat was gorgeous, it felt like something fit for an extra in The Batman. For the Met Gala, she nevertheless refused to play it safe, slipping into the undergarments of an heiress Carrie Coon might admire.
Eilish deserves to ride a fashion high following a momentous few months, in which she won an Academy Award for her song “No Time to Die” and headlined Coachella (for which she performed with Paramore singer Hayley Williams.) Eilish might be most at home on stage in her space buns and oversized T-shirts, but the star has proven again and again that she can pull off a range of fashion aesthetics—from a Powerpuff Girl matching set to a bedazzled bonnet to a sheer rouge cape-gown to a tabloid-stirring pale pink corset. The catch? Just quit commenting on her body. It's not that hard, promise!
“Suddenly you’re a hypocrite if you want to show your skin, and you’re easy and you’re a slut,” Eilish told Vogue for her June 2021 cover interview. “Let’s turn it around and be empowered in that. Showing your body and showing your skin — or not—should not take any respect away from you.”
