Selena Gomez opted not to return to New York City, where she films Only Murders in the Building, to attend tonight's Met Gala. While her absence is a disappointment to fans,
it's not wholly surprising. Gomez has been shootingSelena + Chef on the West Coast the past couple weeks and may not have been able to fly out east for fashion's big night then return home amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Gomez last attended the Met Gala in 2018. She later called that night her biggest beauty disaster and left early. “While I was getting ready for the Met Gala a few years ago, we put on a bit of tanning lotion and it looked beautiful, but as the night went on it kept getting darker and darker,” she told Glamour UK. “When I sat down [inside the event], I saw a photo of myself, and it looked completely orange. And here I am at this prestigious event. My first thought was, ‘I have to get out of here!’”
Gomez also spoke to
">Vogueabout how she didn't realize her tan had gotten progressively darker at the event. “I look at a photo of myself when I sit down, and I'm completely orange,” she recalled. “I was like, ‘This is going to be terrible because I'm going to get eaten alive about this.’”

On the night of the event, she made a joke out of it, sharing security footage of her leaving the event on her Instagram. “Me when I saw my pictures from MET ??♀️,” she captioned it.
“I had my security take a video of me because my first reaction was just to get the hell out of there,” Gomez explained to Vogue. “I'm literally just hauling ass to get to my car.”
