Joe Biden and Kamala Harris Won the 2020 Election, and Twitter Is Exploding With Emotion

It's over! It's done! After days (weeks? months?) of waiting to find out who would win the 2020 election, former vice president Joe Biden has been elected the 46th president of

the United States. Since Tuesday, voters anxiously tracked battleground states as they flipped from red to blue and it appeared Biden would be able to claim victory. The race was officially called on Saturday, November 7, when Biden won Pennsylvania, pushing his total to 273 electoral votes. (A candidate needs 270 to win the election.)

"America, I’m honored that you have chosen me to lead our great country," Biden wrote on Twitter on Saturday. "The work ahead of us will be hard, but I promise you this: I will be a President for all Americans—whether you voted for me or not. I will keep the faith that you have placed in me."

The election is particularly historic as the vice president-elect, Kamala Harris, will now become the first woman, the first Black woman, and the first Asian-American to hold the office. After Biden's win was announced, Harris tweeted, "This election is about so much more than @JoeBiden or me. It’s about the soul of America and our willingness to fight for it. We have a lot of work ahead of us. Let’s get started."

Naturally, a lot of other people on Twitter also had their own emotional reactions. Below, some of the best:

A poetic day for Joe Biden: Exactly 48 years to the day that he was first elected to the United States Senate, Joseph R. Biden has been elected as the 46th president of the United States.

A Black and Indian-American woman was elected VPOTUS, on her own merits and through the tireless legacy of women like Fannie Lou Hamer & Ella Baker & Shirley Chisholm & Stacey Abrams & LaTosha Brown & hundreds of organizers putting in the work today. And tomorrow.

When the Constitution was written in Philadelphia more than 220 years ago, the founding fathers couldn’t imagine that a Black woman would one day help govern this country.
Today, the city delivered the last votes that will reshape America’s imagination. https://t.co/m4g7NxXBKW

What a metaphor that the presidential race is called while Trump is golfing at our expense at one of his golf courses.

Will never forget how it felt to tell my kids that man won four years ago. Sitting next to them now, talking about the end of his presidency and what it means to see the first Black and Asian woman VP—there is so much work to do, but today we're celebrating.
