Twitter Reacts to Georgia’s Historic Election for Control of the Senate

Georgia has been on the minds of Americans for weeks now. Both Democrats and Republicans anticipated Tuesday night and an historic runoff election that will decide which party controls the Senate.

This morning, CNN projected that Democrat Rev. Raphael Warnock beat incumbent Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler in a tight race. Democrat Jon Ossoff is also edging closer to victory over incumbent Republican Sen. David Perdue in a race that remains too close to call.

President-elect Joe Biden needs both seats in the Senate in order to enact key legislation in his administration. Winning both seats would create a 50-50 party split with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris as the tie-breaking vote. GOP victory would maintain Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's standing. With Warnock's projected win, he's slated to become the first Black senator from Georgia and the first Democrat the state would send to the Senate in 20 years. This achievement comes on the heels of Georgia going blue in the presidential election for the first time since 1992. "Joy comes in the morning. Thank you, Georgia," Warnock, a senior pastor of Atlanta's Ebenezer Baptist Church, tweeted on Wednesday.

As the world awaits definitive results from the Ossoff-Perdue race, many are praising the organizing efforts of Stacey Abrams. After losing a highly-contested Georgia governor race in 2018, she founded the voting rights organization Fair Fight. Abrams' efforts, along with those of other Black and female organizers, inspired record turnout and may have helped flip Georgia blue in the Senate.

Here are some of the best reactions to Georgia's groundbreaking results from Hillary Clinton, Kerry Washington, Katie Porter, and more.

Think about it: @staceyabrams getting an election stolen from her might lead to a Democratic majority in the Senate and then her being Georgia’s governor in 2022. Won’t black women do it.

Watching returns from Georgia, it’s hard not to think about the hundreds of election workers who again tonight are carefully doing democracy’s business under unprecedented scrutiny, amid a raging pandemic, and with a president relentlessly and baselessly calling them thieves.

Black women did this—but this isn't just "Black Girl Magic." This is the result of pure organizing, labor, and love that Black women have poured into GA.

Gratitude to every one of my sisters who willed the possibilities of this moment into existence. We see you and we love you.

As ya’ll wake up, don’t sleep on the role WNBA played in Georgia race. Warnock was polling below ten percent when the Atlanta Dream started wearing his name in response to co-owner Kelly Loefler’s condemnation of the BLM movement.
