Fashion pets: Instagram’s animal influencers

If there’s one signifier of fashion world success: it’s when your pet accumulates the same amount of influence and Instagram followers as a top runway

model. And during lockdown, pets—the lesser-seen industry sidekicks-turned-stars—came into the forefront.

But much like the fashion industry itself, some pets sit comfortably at icon status. Neville Jacobs, Marc Jacobs’ black-and-white bull terrier was once dubbed “the hardest working dog in fashion” by T Magazine, and now counts over 195,000 followers on the platform, alongside photos with everyone from Christy Turlington and Sofia Coppola to VogueItalia coverstars Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber

British Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful’s Boston terrier Ru—who has over 17,000 followers on Instagram—can often be seen wearing a hot-pink roll neck by Christian Cowan, has landed himself a Guardian Weekend cover and has his very own Models.com profile. Meanwhile for Audrey Versace—Donatella Versace’s jack russell terrier, who was named after a model she shot with Richard Avedon—Instagram serves as a prism into the world of Versace through a dog’s eyes (think custom sweaters, gold chains and endless private jets).

In New York, Thom Browne’s shaggy-haired dachshund Hector’s Instagram bio reads “Low to the ground, High Fashion”–and it couldn’t be more accurate. Not only has he served as the inspiration behind a line of accessories for the brand, but with nearly 12,000 Instagram followers, he can also be seen propped on a Pierre Jeanerett chair in custom Thom Browne, and in the arms of Vivienne Westwood model and Vogue photographer Richie Shazam.
