Alek Wek, modella, nata nel 1977 a Wau, Sudan Dal Sudan meridionale, Alek Wek fugge a Londra come rifugiata politica, portando con sé il ricordo di un Paese distrutto dalla guerra.

Dopo il debutto come modella nel 1995, Alek appare in video musicali di Tina Turner e Janet Jackson, diventando una vera e propria icona pop degli anni Novanta. Da Chanel ad Alexander McQueen, da Gucci a Louis Vuitton, Alek si muove fra passerella e set cinematografici, partecipando a grandi produzioni hollywoodiane quali le Quattro Piume di Shekhar Kapur (2002) e Suspiria di Luca Guadagnino (2018). Inoltre, Alek è oggi membro del  Comitato statunitense Advisory Council, facendosi portavoce a livello internazionale della crisi umanitaria sudanese.
