1. Netflix to adapt Lupita Nyong’o’s children book ‘Sulwe’ into an animated musical
Netflix announced on Thursday that it is adapting “Sulwe,” the bestselling children’s book by Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, into an animated musical, the latest move by the streamer to bolster its feature animation slate. Sulwe, written by Lupita Nyong’o with illustrations by Vashti Harrison, follows Sulwe, a child who has skin darker than anyone she knows, and all she wants is to be beautiful and bright.
The picture book was published in October 2019 by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers and was a New York Times bestseller. No details yet on the auspices of the animation of Lupita Nyong’o’s Sulwe, which joins a Netflix roster of animated titles.
2. Nigerian economy out of recession – FG
Nigeria’s economy unexpectedly came out of a recession in the fourth quarter as growth in agriculture and telecommunications offset a sharp drop in oil production. The gross domestic product grew 0.11% in the three months through December from a year earlier, compared with a decline of 3.6% in the third quarter, the Abuja-based National Bureau of Statistics reported on its website on Thursday.
The surprising rebound means Africa’s largest economy may recover faster than expected as the oil price and output increase this year. It could also point to the growing importance of the non-crude sector.
3. South Africa: Bonang Matheba speaks at UN Women summit
Media personality and businesswoman Bonang Matheba recently took part in the third annual Procter and Gamble (P&G) and UN Women “We See Equal” Gender Equality Summit, which was held virtually for the first time this year. Under the theme “Unsaid and Undone,” the summit brought together leading voices on gender equality to challenge the current discourse and commit to the actions needed for progress.
The “Being Bonang” star delivered a powerful talk at the summit around ‘The Power of Your Voice’. Using her experiences, she shared insights around leveraging your voice in the advertising and media space to reach millions of people, challenge rigid gender roles and empower both men and women.
4. Ghanaian artist Amoako Boafo named in ‘Time 100 Next’
Award-winning portraiture and figurative painter, Amoako Boafo has made it into the 2021 ‘TIME 100 Next’ list. The list highlighted the works of the 37-year-old and the impact it has had on black identity and the African diaspora.
To ensure he has more established control over his work, Amoafo Boafo bought back his works and created a studio for local creatives in Accra. Following his collaboration with Dior, Boafo became the first African artist to develop a line with the French fashion house.
5. Man City deny making offer for Messi
Manchester City says they have not made any offer to Lionel Messi, with the Barcelona forward’s contract set to expire at the end of the season. The Argentine superstar is free to speak to non-Spanish clubs and has been linked with several leading European sides, with City and Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain seen as the leading candidates.
It has been reported that the Premier League leaders made a revised offer for Messi but a club spokesperson gave contradictory information to the media emphasizing that the speculation is untrue and that there have been no talks.
