The classic number par excellence, the Burberry trench, from the new Spring Summer 2021 men’s collection designed by Riccardo Tisci is probably the least close to the original. The coat has turned into a longline gilet shedding the sleeves, yet keeping the double breasted buttoning, the decorative bands across the shoulders and the triangular layer on the right side of the chest. This coat has also kept its classic fabric, gabardine, enriching it with a sailor inspired multicolored motif.
Another rather original take on the classic trench coat is offered by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen. The design of the celebrated raincoat is combined with that of a single-breasted sartorial coat, resulting in a hybrid outerwear piece, half trench, half coat. A subversive design that echoes the authentic spirit of the lamented founder of the brand.
Decidedly over the top, Jonathan Anderson’s trench coat from Loewe’s Spring Summer 2021 men's collection may be defined as couture for its dramatic silhouette, featuring a profusion of fabric at the sides, draping at the back to create an egg shaped silhouette that recalls the creations of the first French couturiers.
The men’s trench coats from Ermenegildo Zegna, Michael Kors Collection and Salvatore Ferragamo’s ready-to-wear Spring Summer 2021 collections are decidedly more understated and easier to wear.
