Announcing the 2nd Edition of The Daniele Tamagni Grant

Since Tamagni started his artistic journey in photography at 32 years old, there won't be an age limit to apply, but applicants should have less than five years of professional experience: the aim of the grant is to support emerging photographers in making their first steps in the industry. Artists can submit their applications here.

The Daniele Tamagni Grant will encourage the recipient to become a positive agent of change, by shining new light over the evolution of the African continent and identity thanks to the support of a global network and through the creation of a new body of work that will be presented for admission to the Addis Foto Fest in Ethiopia and an Italian Photography Festival (still to be confirmed) and to be introduced to international photo editors and professionals of the media industry.

THE SCHOLARSHIP
The recipient of the Daniele Tamagni Grant will receive a one year scholarship at the Photojournalism and Documentary Photography Program at the Market Photo Workshop School in Johannesburg, ZA, from the end of January 2022 to early December 2022.

The scholarship includes:
- Market Photo Workshop School tuition for a one year enrollment to the Photojournalism and Documentary Photography Program
- A monthly stipend of 10,000 ZAR (around 580€/650$) for 12 months, to cover for residence, meals and other out of pocket expenses during the program in Johannesburg
- Medical insurance
- A/R flights to Johannesburg, ZA

THE INTERNATIONAL JURY

Aïda Muluneh: Aïda is an artist and entrepreneur, founder of Addis Foto Fest. With work recently featured in MoMA’s New Photography 2018 Exhibition, she is the 2007 recipient of the European Union Prize in Mali-based Rencontres Africaines de la Photographie. Her artwork can be found in MoMA’s permanent collection, at The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art, among others. She develops cultural projects with global partners through her company DESTA.

Sara Sozzani Maino: Sara is the Deputy director of Vogue Italia and Head of Vogue Talents. She scouts and supports the best emerging creative talents in fashion photography. Sara serves as a judge in fashion competitions, including LVMH’s prize, the International Talent Support (ITS), Woolmark Prize, Fashion Trust Arabia. Since 2018, she has been the International Brand Ambassador for Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana.

Ekow Eshun: Ekow is Chairman of the Fourth Plinth Commissioning Group, overseeing the most prestigious public art program in the UK, and the former Director of the ICA in London. He is the author of Africa State of Mind: Contemporary Photography Reimagines a Continent, nominated for the Lucie Photo Book Prize, and Black Gold of the Sun, nominated for the Orwell Prize. He has contributed to monographs and publications on Chris Ofili, Kehinde Wiley, John Akomfrah, Amoako Boafo and Duro Olowu, among many others.

Marco Longari: a photojournalist since 1998 covering the conflict in Kosovo, he joined Agence France Presse in Rwanda. As Chief Photographer he worked in Nairobi and in Jerusalem, where he covered the Israeli and the Palestinian territories, Egypt, Libya and Syria. He is now based in Johannesburg as AFP Africa Chief Photographer and is a lecturer at the Rome School of Photojournalism. In 2002 his work Refugees was published with a preface by the Dalai Lama. His images have been exhibited worldwide.

Laura El-Tantawy: documentary photographer, artful book maker & mentor. Having lived between east and west for most of her life, this multidimensionality inspires her work. She explores notions of home and belonging and is recognized for her uniquely lyrical eye on reality. Her work has been published in The New Yorker, Afar, Le Monde, Wall Street Journal, National Geographic, Time, New York Times, Huck & Foam.

Chiara Bardelli Nonino: Chiara is Photo Editor of Vogue Italia and L’Uomo Vogue and Curator for the Vogue Photo Festival. With a focus on contemporary photography, she works on independent editorial and curatorial projects and juries. During 2020, she was part of the jury of Hyères festival and she curated the monographic exhibition “Paolo Roversi - Studio Luce” at MAR in Italy. She has collaborated with the British Journal of Photography, Foam Magazine, The Photocaptionist, among others.

Eimear Martin: Eimear is an independent curator and writer in contemporary arts. Formerly Associate Curator at Hayward Gallery, London, she organized and curated major exhibitions with artists including John Akomfrah, Hicham Berrada, Lee Bul, Andreas Gursky, Hannah Starkey. She also curate the acclaimed group exhibitions The Infinite Mix and History is Now. She was Associate Curator for the development of Dublin Contemporary 2011 and held curatorial positions at the Irish Museum of Modern Art. She worked with artist James Coleman on exhibitions at the Grand Palais, Paris, and Reina Sofia, Madrid. Eimear guest lectures regularly and contributes to catalogues and art magazines.

Uche Okpa-Iroha: Uche is a founding member of the Nigerian Blackbox photography collective and f the Invisible Borders Trans-African photo travel group. His first major work “Under Bridge Life" in 2008 favorably received by critics, exposed him to international media and art market. A two time winner of Seydou Keita Award at the 8th and 10th Bamako Encounters and recipient of Jean Paul Blanchette Prize.; nominated at the Prix Pictet Award “Growth" and the National Geographic All Roads Program. He is a contributor of “Lagos-the City at work” and “Nigerian behind the Lens”. He works in Lagos as the founder/director of The Nlele Institute photography platform, Lagos Open Range and as cofounder of FOTOPARTY Lagos.

Benoît Baume: Benoit, after a first experience in journalism at Libération, managed press relations during the America’s Cup in New Zealand in 2003. Back to Paris, he became the editor of the photography magazine “Le Monde du Regard”. In 2013 he created Fisheye Magazine on paper and online, as well as a communication agency and a gallery, imposing an innovative approach in the field of the photo media. Actively working on Virtual Reality, he established the VR Arles festival.

Khona Dlamini: Khona is currently the Programmes and Projects Manager at Market Photo Workshop. Previously, she was heading the Photojournalism and Documentary Programme. Khona’s interest lies in youth development through nurturing creative talent. In her work, starting in 1999, her focus has been on using the arts as a medium to speak to issues pertaining to women, marginalized youth and as a skill that young people can use towards a sustainable career path. She set up Ikamva Youth South Africa’s Durban offices, where she oversaw the tutoring of young people from under-resourced schools into the tertiary education and beyond. She is currently one of the mentors for Women Photograph 2020.
