The Emmys red carpet was missing Zendaya and her stylist Law Roach's magic tonight, as the Euphoria actress opted to skip the Los Angeles ceremony. Her absence isn't too surprising: Euphoria
does have three nominations but in non-acting categories. The show is up for Outstanding Contemporary Makeup (Non-Prosthetic), Outstanding Contemporary Costumes, and Outstanding Cinematography For A Single-Camera Series (One Hour).
Zendaya skipped the Met Gala last week because she has been shooting the HBO series. She explained her absence during an interview with Extra ahead of the event. "I will be on Euphoria,” she said. “My fans are very upset with me. I will unfortunately not be able to attend [the Met Gala], because I'll be working for Euphoria. I wish I could, especially since this fashion icon [Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya's Dune co-star] is going to be hosting.”
Zendaya spoke to British Voguefor its September issue about playing Rue, a recovering drug addict on the show. “[I am] the most sober person you could ask to play this part,” she said. “I can only understand it to an extent, and then I have to lean on Sam [Levinson, Euphoria's creator]. He was an addict for many years as a teenager. And he’s been clean since he was 19 years old. That’s the thing that makes me hopeful. When we have all this really dark shit—especially this season breaks my heart for Rue—there’s a glimmer of hope because I know that she is a version of him.”
